Toru Tanaka was a titan of the squared circle, a powerhouse of a wrestler who left an indelible mark on the sport. Born Charles J. Kalani Jr. in Honolulu, Hawaii, Tanaka would later adopt the ring name Prof. Toru Tanaka, a moniker that reflected his cerebral and physical prowess.

Standing at 6 feet tall and weighing a whopping 273 pounds, Tanaka was an imposing figure who could back up his boasts with brutal efficiency. His wrestling style was a hybrid of strength and agility, allowing him to overpower opponents while also showcasing his technical skill.

Tanaka's career spanned over three decades, during which he worked for various promotions including WWE, AJPW, NWA, CWA, and UWF. He was a tag team specialist, winning the World Tag Team Championship multiple times, as well as capturing singles titles such as the NWA American Heavyweight Championship, NWA Georgia Heavyweight Championship, and NWA Florida/Georgia Tag Team Championships.

One of Tanaka's signature moves was the Cobra Clutch, a devastating submission hold that left opponents writhing in agony. His powerbombs and body slams were equally feared, earning him the nickname "The Professor" for his cerebral approach to the sport.

Tanaka's legacy extends beyond his impressive list of accolades. He was a mentor to many up-and-coming wrestlers, sharing his knowledge and experience to help them hone their craft. His impact on the sport is still felt today, with many considering him one of the greatest tag team specialists in wrestling history.
