The Unsung Hero of Japanese Pro Wrestling: Haruka Eigen

When we think of Japanese pro wrestling, names like Antonio Inoki, Giant Baba, and Jumbo Tsuruta come to mind. But there's another figure who played a significant role in shaping the country's professional wrestling landscape - Haruka Eigen, aka Great Togo, Togo The Great, or Masaru Eigen.

Born in 1946 in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, Eigen began his wrestling career in the late 1960s. Standing at 1.78 meters tall and weighing 110 kilograms, he was a formidable technician with a strong sumo background. His impressive physique earned him the nickname "Primadonna," a nod to his charismatic presence in the ring.

Eigen's professional journey took him to various promotions across Japan, including New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW), Pro Wrestling NOAH, and All Japan Pro Wrestling (AJPW). He also ventured abroad, competing in the American Wrestling Association (AWA) and the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA).

Throughout his career, Eigen accumulated an impressive array of championships. His most notable titles include the IWA World Tag Team Championship, NWA Mid-America Heavyweight Championship, NWA Wrestle Birmingham Heavyweight Championship, NWA World Tag Team Championship, and NWA North American Tag Team Championship.

Despite his accomplishments, Eigen's legacy is often overshadowed by more prominent figures in Japanese wrestling history. However, his dedication to the sport and his contributions to the development of professional wrestling in Japan cannot be understated.

Tragically, Eigen passed away on November 28, 2016, at the age of 70 due to a heart attack. His final match took place on March 26, 2006, but his impact on Japanese pro wrestling will continue to be felt for years to come.

As we reflect on the life and career of Haruka Eigen, we're reminded that there are always unsung heroes who play crucial roles in shaping the sports we love. Eigen's story serves as a testament to the power of perseverance, hard work, and a passion for the squared circle.
